The Government is chasing Simon Developments, a liquidated Christchurch company for $800,000 for allegedly defective and leaky school buildings.

It is understood Simon Developments, registered in 1984, was a popular contractor for school builds in Canterbury.

Construction at Fendalton Open Air School was completed in 2005 by the company but soon after the building was found to have defects resulting in weathertightness issues. The liquidator's documents show that $340,000 of remediation work was required.

Papers were lodged with the High Court by the Ministry of Education against co-defendants Simon Developments and Ian Krause Architects in 2010, and the case remains active and unresolved, according to the liquidator's report.

The report also states that the ministry is chasing another $450,000 in estimated costs to remedy defective work done at South New Brighton School.

"It is possible further claims arising from weathertight building issues could arise as building projects undertaken by the company on various school properties in Christchurch are reviewed and assessed." said Murray G Allott in a recent liquidator's report.
