Battling a huge leaky building problem

Friday, 25 November 2011 13:57

Pinehill School on the north shore say every building in the school is plagued with leaks.

The result is years of recladding, demolishing and rebuilding says the principal Julien Le Sueur.

A Education Ministry survey have revealed around 20 percent of New Zealand schools have so far fallen victim to the epidemic, with a further 907 schools yet to be assessed.

With over $15 million spent on repairs so far, the government has estimated another $1.1 billion will be needed.

Thursday, 24 November 2011 10:05

Nine owners of units in a leaky townhouse block have been awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars of compensation from the council and the construction company who built the dwellings.

The total bill comes close to $2 million, of which Auckland Council will contribute just over $1m. The remainder will be paid by building company Hughes & Tuke Construction Limited.

The units are in Albany's Broadwood Villas complex which was built in the mid-1990s.

Leaky building victory soured

Wednesday, 16 November 2011 13:20

Auckland Council is taking a Kaukapakapa couple back to the High Court after it was found liable to pay $515,000 compensation for a leaking house.

David and Karen Strickland won the case against the council, builder and others but the council's lawyer has appealed, leaving Mr Strickland worried how they will pay for their defence.  This is despite the tribunal criticising the council for signing the place off with deviations from consented plans.

Serious structural defects can only be resolved by demolishing and rebuilding the house, say the Stricklands.
